Downloads: 107Position Paper on Snyder Budget
Dear Ms. Valentine (and colleagues):
Good work - keep up the pressure!
The political establishment here is under relentless pressure from the other side to water-down or defer necessary reforms. Your group is helping to offset those bad incentives for lawmkers to do the wrong things.
We all need to do everything possible to make sure their incentives to do the right things are even stronger. For Tea Party members, that means patting your particular state reps and senators on the head when they do good things (like the recent unemployment insurance reform, emergency financial manager reform, and House-passed government consolidation reform). And whapping them with a rolled up newspaper (figuratively speaking, of course) when they do bad things.
Snyder's pension tax is unfortunate for the reasons you cite - there are much greater savings available, and it will have negative unintended consequences. We aren't going to beat him up too much for it ourselves though, for this reason: The overall package has been scored a net tax cut by Grover Norquist at Americans for Tax Reform (keeper of the "No New Taxes" pledge), and as long as the bottom line is "government gets less" the Mackinac Center doesn't get into the politics of whose particular ox gets gored.
But we will still keep on saying the pension tax is unnecessary and unfortunate!
Thanks again, and keep pushing.
Regards,
Jack McHugh
Mackinac Center Senior Legislative Analyst
